Photonics Empowered Passive Radiative Cooling

Passive radiative cooling has recently received renewed interest because of its unprecedented capabilities in terrestrial objects below ambient air temperature without external energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission. This technology been demonstrated as promising replacements/complements conventional compressed air-based active systems, which can significantly impact the global landscape by providing a green efficient way. The key to this success is judiciously designed photonic micro/nanostructures, simultaneously reflect solar irradiation emit thermal infrared emission across atmospheric transparency window 8–13 ?m. Herein, an introduction fundamental principles passive given, discussing critical factors associated with net power cooling. Following this, emerged materials structures (e.g., multilayer thin films, micro/nanoparticles, crystals, metamaterials, metasurfaces, etc.) that facilitate are reviewed fruitfully analyzed discussed. Some possible scale-up manufacturing ways toward practical deployment energy-efficient real-world applications then potential also summarized envisioned.
